In her early video Tanz für eine Frau (Dance for one woman), Ulrike Rosenbach dances in a circle, clothed in a white, lace-trimmed dress, to the waltz Ich tanze mit Dir in den Himmel hinein. While her movements evoke the meditation of a dervish, it is also clear that she is only dancing with herself – an expression of feminine self-determination. At the same time, the title conveys an ambivalence: in its physical exertion, this at first seemingly powerful and flattering dance for one woman also points to a coercive element: at the end, the artist collapses, lying motionless on the ground.
