On the occasion of the 100th birthday of the eminent dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham, Neues Museum is showing Merce by Merce by Paik. This work by Nam June Paik was made in cooperation with Cunningham, Charles Atlas and Shigeko Kubota. In the first part, Blue Studio: Five Segments, Cunningham performs choreographies that were specially designed for television and video technology. The work clearly reflects his view that dance defines itself, independent of music, primarily through movement. The second part, Merce and Marcel, positions this concept in relation to the avant-gardist Marcel Duchamp, an important source of inspiration for both Paik and Cunningham concerning expanded definitions of the arts and the merging of art and life.
In 2019, the Film Room is devoted to dance in the moving image, screening video works by Nevin Aladağ, Nam June Paik, Ulrike Rosenbach and Miranda Pennell for three months each.
