A Change of Scenery

Artists' wallpapers from the Sammlung Goetz

A fascinating interplay of interior and exterior is offered by this joint project, presenting artist-designed wallpaper from the Sammlung Goetz in the six façade spaces at Neues Museum. Most of the designs were originally created in the context of large-scale installations and are adapted to each new space.

To date, little attention has been focussed on artist-designed wallpaper as a theme in its own right. The architectural peculiarity of the façade at Neues Museum makes it possible to show six different designs by the artists Martin Boyce, Robert Gober, Rodney Graham, Andy Hope 1930, Sarah Lucas and Abigail Lane, comparing them and allowing their full spatial impact to be experienced.

The Sammlung Goetz is an internationally renowned collection of contemporary art with its own exhibition venue in Munich. Founded in 1993, it now contains more than 5000 works in almost every genre, focussing especially on Arte Povera, American painting since the 1980s, Young British Artists, media art, photography, and works on paper.
