In 2019, on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham, known as the creator of “video dance”, the programme at Neue Museum’s film and video room is devoted to dance in film and video art.
The first work in the series is Familie Teczan by Nevin Aladağ (born 1972). It shows a Turkish-German family singing folk and pop songs in Turkish, Arabic, German and English and performing breakdance. The sources and traditions playfully combine into a shared image of popular culture, highlighting its hybridity.
