Miranda Pennell (born 1963) filmed a regiment of soldiers performing a military tattoo in the English countryside. But the surroundings and the action don’t seem to fit together – why this parade when no one is watching? Is it just a rehearsal? The idea of such choreographies of absolute effectiveness and precision, bringing together a large number of human bodies, is taken to absurd lengths by the music heard on the soundtrack in addition to the military music performed by the marching band. It bears no resemblance to military music, appearing instead as a commentary by the artist, viewing the soldiers’ movements from a different perspective – as a dance choreography.
