Michael Franz (born 1974) critically questions the conditions of artistic production, often focussing attention on the claim to originality. For a group exhibition he curated in 2017, he created six drawings in four different standardized paper formats based on a painting by Horst Antes. Besides the issue of originality, this acted as a touchstone for questions concerning choices of medium (translation of painting into drawing) and format (standardized over individual). In the final version, the number of drawings has increased to nine, and a fifth format has been added (A0). The labyrinth into which Franz leads the viewer is not rendered less obscure by a video taking a nonchalant ironic film look at the banality of the art world.
