Raum-Teiler

30 years of the street magazine Straßenkreuzer

To mark three decades on the streets, Straßenkreuzer shows the range of its work in photographs of living sculptures – as a calendar for 2024 to hang on the wall at home, and as an exhibition to experience at Neues Museum.

The show traces the development and background of the calendar motifs and offers insights into the magazine’s organization, accompanied by a programme of events. A selection of front pages from across the past thirty years reflects the variety of the paper’s content, revealing editorial changes and documenting a piece of contemporary history.

Raum-Teiler (Room-Divider) focusses on the theme of public space, how people experience it and how it is presented to them. The people who sell the street magazine are experts on this subject: on the one hand because public space is where they do their selling, and on the other because they have direct experience of life on the streets and periods of homelessness. But the magazine’s staff and readers also share this space with everyone else. Public space is an arena for encounter and exchange – core concerns addressed by Straßenkreuzer.

Over the course of a year, twelve Living Sculptures were created, centred around projects by the association responsible for the street magazine – and around all of those involved, who “inserted” themselves into the various sculptures.

The project was realized under the artistic direction of Barbara Engelhard. The theme of people and public space has been part of her work for many years.
The photographers Anika Maaß and Maria Bayer, who have both been working for the magazine for many years, produced high-quality images of each sculpture.

The calendar (29.7 x 42 cm) can be purchased from Straßenkreuzer and its sellers for 15 euros.

The exhibition is located in the foyer of Neues Museum.
Entrance is free of charge.
