For many years now, the artistic practice of Caroline Achaintre (born 1969 in Toulouse, lives in London) has been marked by tufted textile works and ceramics. Her use of craft techniques and materials from a “domestic context” reflects an expressive need, turning the domestic and familiar into the strange and uncanny.
The often archaic-looking wall hangings generate a feeling of unease that begins with their shaggy materiality and continues in their evocation of primitive and animal themes. In her mask-like ceramics, too, Achaintre explores the strange and the disconcerting in an exotic register, making works that are appealing and repulsive at the same time.
The show at Neues Museum Nuremberg accompanies the exhibition Caroline Achaintre. Doppelgänger at Museum Lothar Fischer in Neumarkt (12 February – 11 June 2023).
