ars viva 12/13

Systems

Each year the Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft (the Cultural Committee of German Industry and Commerce) awards the ars viva prize to young visual artists living in Germany. And each year the award brings with it three exhibitions in renowned museums. This year the Neues Museum in Nuremberg is the first venue for the award-winners' exhibition.

The keyword for the newcomer's prize this year is "Systems". A jury of specialists selected this year's award-winning artists from a total of 42 nominees: Simon Denny, Özlem Günyol & Mustafa Kunt, and Melvin Moti.

The video installations by Berlin-based New Zeeland artist Simon Denny are concerned with the dissemination, reach and consumption of visual images via the media, in particular television.

Melvin Moti, who lives in Rotterdam and Berlin, directs his work to optical phenomena and to questions of how the human brain perceives and processes information, and how scientific and historical processes mould our visual culture.

Özlem Günyol & Mustafa Kunt, two artists of Turkish descent from Frankfurt am Main, employ a variety of media such as video, sculpture and photography to investigate the structures of social and political systems and the ways they influence the construction of identity.

After Nuremberg, the exhibition will move on to the Kunsthalle zu Kiel and the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue as well as an art edition limited to 20 copies.
