Every weekend, football gives us fresh experiences of unpredictability. But chance is hard to bear, and the ways superstitious fans and others try to force their luck are often bizarre. Never washing their shirts and scarves or always taking the same route to the stadium provide the reassuring feeling of having done everything in one’s power to make the sure the match goes well.
Hamburg artist Aleen Solari is interested in this phenomenon: “I like to explore the magic of rituals, customs and routines. To look at match days in various different ways. From mental training to the special outfits worn by fans. The ‘research results’ are translated into art objects.”
Solari’s research project is the fourth work in the ClubKunst series initiated by Nuremberg’s local football team, 1. FC Nürnberg. Previously, Dagmar Buhr, Winfried Baumann and Philip Kojo Metz engaged with various aspects of the sport. This is the first time that Neues Museum has hosted the series, marking a double anniversary: 125 years of 1. FC Nürnberg, and 25 years of Neues Museum.
