Raphaela Vogel

Uterus Land

About the presentation

With Uterusland, a large-scale installation by Raphaela Vogel recently acquired by the Museumsinitiative, we welcome one of today’s fastest-rising artists. In the accompanying video work, Vogel stages her own birth – filmed in a swimming pool in her native city of Nuremberg, where she also studied. Together with a larger-than-life anatomical model of a female breast and the milk-like polyurethane cast of a life-size horse figure, she formulates questions concerning the construction of gender and emancipated artistic production. For Vogel, the latter is always linked to an unsparing self-representation that identifies the pressure of the creative urge as both an affliction and a force.
