Franz Erhard Walther

Gelbmodellierung, 1980-81

Franz Erhard Walther’s Gelbmodellierung (Yellow Modelling, 1980-81) is one of the “wall formations” he made between 1978 and 1986. Within the series, this work stands out not only on account of its size (11 x 5 metres). In a unique connection between artwork and architectural space, Walther treats the museum wall as a plinth for his work, which viewers can approach in the modes of “before”, “beside” or “inside” that are so important to the artist. Only in the public’s actual or imagined interaction with the artwork is the artwork itself completed.

The renewed presentation of this work, which the artist himself counts among his key works, is made possible by a permanent loan from the Kerstin Hiller & Helmut Schmelzer Collection.
